Developing Diversity Dispositions: 3D
Description : In a collaborative effort, the University Theatre Department and the College of Education developed video vignettes on sensitive topics for the purpose of improving teacher candidates’/teacher professionals’ awareness and appreciation of diversity in education. One of the College of Education outcomes (aligned with Louisiana’s guidelines for redesigned teacher preparation programs) is that the teaching candidate and teaching professional will understand learning style differences and apply this knowledge to create equitable and adaptable learning opportunities for all students. Two very important concerns are addressed: (1) the need for teacher candidates to observe “real life” situations in the classroom; and (2) the need for theatre to have additional opportunities to hone their performance, playwriting, lighting design, directing, and video editing skills. This project has encouraged collaboration and understanding among the College of Education, the College of Liberal Arts/University Theatre, and the community. These vignettes are used in education classes to serve as catalysts for discussions about diversity, contemporary behavioral situations, and other issues affecting education.
