VROOM: Visualizing the Real Operations of Math
Description : This exciting project takes the visual language of mathematics and makes it more accessible to blind students in an effort to facilitate the entry of more blind students into careers in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. Blind students will receive algebra instruction in accessible formats; establish relationships with mentors for follow-up support and encouragement; and learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics-based career options. School systems serving the blind can implement lesson plans for teaching math to blind students, improve existing techniques for teaching graphics information, and use CD-ROMS to teach existing students and future teachers. As a result of this project, an interdisciplinary team of mathematicians, engineers, instructional technologists, and special educators have created an evidence-based Math 101 curriculum that is technologically appropriate for the blind and ready for further analysis and research.
