CMU Water Barriers Above Ground Water Barriers Rehabilitation of Stone Structures
Description : This program explored electrokinetic methods to address long term performance of concrete and stone structures. Moisture was controlled in this study by extending the use of electrophoretic nanoparticle transport to reduce the permeability of structures that consisted of poured concrete, concrete brick mortar and various stone and mortar combinations. Emphasis was also placed on upgrading the strength and permeability of existing structures. Part of this effort was focused on consolidating deteriorated mortar and stone components of imperiled facilities. An examination of electrochemical strategies used to lessen the corrosion of steel reinforcements and other facilities of distress was another key area of exploration. Other work focused on the instability of soils adjacent to concrete foundations. Methods were brought together to provide active control of soil-structure interactions that were related to soil moisture content and proximity. Overall, this work was organized into specific projects that culminated into developmental phases. Each phase constituted a key bench mark for commercial validation.
