Preparing Historic American Buildings Survey Drawings of the Ghana House, Melrose Plantation, Melrose, Louisiana
Description : The Melrose Plantation in Melrose, Louisiana is home to what may be the oldest set of buildings built by and for people of African descent. The African House, Yucca House, Big House, Creole Barn, and Ghana House were all built during the period of African-American ownership of the Melrose Plantation. Four of the five structures have been documented through the Historic American Building Survey (HABS). The African House, Yucca House, Big House, and Creole Barn were documented in 1940, 1995, 1997, and 1999 respectively. The purpose of this project is to complete measured drawings, according to HABS standards, of the Ghana House. The faculty and students of the School of Architecture at Louisiana Tech University will accomplish this work. Students will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator to measure, photograph and document this building within the parameters set by the Division of Historic Preservation and the National Park Service. Upon completion of this project, all finished and original material shall be deposited in the Library of Congress Archives.
